Middle-aged Buddhist ‘abbot’ of Chinese monastery renounces vows and leaves abruptly to wed young bride

Senior Chinese Buddhist renounces his vows for love: The head of one of China’s main Buddhist monasteries has abruptly cast off his robes in order to marry a 26-year-old jade dealer

Qing Xian, who is thought to be in his 40s, shocked his fellow monks by handing in his resignation from the monastery on June 9.  He married his sweetheart, named only as Ms Yan, three days ago at the Grand View Hotel in the western city of Kunming.

Mr Qing had lived in the Qiongzhu temple in Kunming for 20 to 25 years, according to his fellow monks . . .

According to the monks in the temple, Mr Qing did not tell anyone, even his closest friends or his family of his plan.  Little is known about his wife, or about how they met.

A spokesman for the Buddhist Association said his resignation at the temple had “been approved” and that they “could not control what he does now”.
