‘There are mistakes in this book . . . as I continue to loathe research.’ ~ John Grisham, in his latest thriller The Confession.
One thinks of all the writers, both aspiring and established, who spend countless research hours Googling and consulting reference books, even visiting locations whenever possible, just to avoid making factual mistakes.
Research is grist to the mill for writers of every variety, including thriller writers (as David Morrell and many other top professionals will testify). Rich, spoilt brat John Grisham could easily employ a full-time researcher to fact-check for him. Instead, by expressing such a ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude he insults his profession and reveals a streak of self-satisfied laziness.
